What is Ttareung? (Type, fee)

Ttareungi is a bicycle sharing service operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. As part of a public policy to encourage public transport, it is affordable and accessible to everyone.

There are 37,500 Ttareungi bicycles in operation at 2,523 rental offices in Seoul (as of September 30, 2021), and the total number of rentals per year exceeds 20 million.

Ttareungi type
Ttareungi is divided into LCD type and QR code type depending on the type of terminal. The LCD type is an early model that requires card registration. Recently, most of the QR type Ttareungi models are easy to rent and return.

Because the number of bicycles is much higher and it is easy to use (only with a smartphone), we recommend QR Ttareungi as much as possible.

Ttareungi Fee
To ride the Ttareungi, you need to purchase a pass. The ticket prices according to the ‘period of use’ and ‘basic rental time’ are summarized below.

Period of use Basic rental time
1 hour 2 hours
One-day pass 1,000 won 2,000 won
7 days 3,000 won 4,000 won
30 days 5,000 won 7,000 won
180 days 15,000 won 20,000 won
365 days 30,000 won 40,000 won
All-day pass (Foreigners only) 24 hours 5,000 won

「Period of use」 means the period during which the purchased ticket can be used (the deadline), and 「Basic rental time」 means the time that can be used when renting Ttareungi once. There is no limit to the number of rentals during the period of use.

For example, let’s say you purchase a daily ticket with a basic rental time of 1 hour at KRW 1,000. As long as you return the rental within 1 hour of the rental once, you can re-rent it any number of times during the day (24 hours).

In this way, ‘rental → return’ can be repeated during the period of use in this way: ’30-minute ride in the morning, 50-minute ride for lunch, and 40-minute ride for dinner’. If you find a rental shop well, you can do a bicycle tour in Seoul for 1,000 won a day.

However, if you exceed the basic rental time of the purchased ticket, an additional charge of 200 won per 5 minutes will be charged. Please note that the additional use time is limited to a maximum of 4 hours (6 hours for a 2-hour pass), after which it will be automatically reported to the police station.

As you can see from the Ttareungi fare table, it is much more economical to purchase a commuter pass for frequent users. In particular, please note that there is a 15% (30% daily pass) discount if you pay with Zero Pay by the end of 2021.

How to use Ttareungi (rental → driving → return)

The use of Ttareungi is divided into four stages: purchase, rental, driving, and return of a ticket. However, you have to install the app first, and if you do not know the location of the rental office, you will need to go through the ‘Search for rental office’ step.

3. Search for Ttareungi rental shops
If you do not know of a rental station nearby, you can search for a nearby rental station on the map by running the ‘Ttareungi App’. If you click the rental office, you can check how many LCD, QR, and Sprout Ttareungi are currently available.

For reference, rental locations marked in yellow on the map are not available for rental/return of LCD Ttareungi. Sprout Ttareungi refers to Ttareungi with 20-inch wheels (normal 24 inches).

4. Ttareungi rental
I found a Ttareungi rental shop. The rental office has signs and stands as shown below. Pick a bike you want to ride.

Ttareungi – rental office

① Turn on the Bluetooth of your mobile phone ② Click ‘Rent’ in the Ttareungi app ③ Recognize the QR code at the rear of the bicycle. When the connection is complete, the lock is unlocked and a message appears indicating that the rental has started.

5. Driving & Temporary Lock
Now ride the Ttareungyi and have fun running. Compared to the low fare, Ttareungi has a better driving feel than expected. The body is sturdy and the wheels are large. Gear can also be adjusted by turning the lever inside the right handlebar.

Ttareungyi – Gear

Can you stop the Ttareungi for a while while driving? To prevent theft, pull down the rear wheel lock to temporarily lock it. Temporary lock if you lower the lock at a location other than the rental station, and return it when you get off the rental station!

6. Return the Ttareungi
After driving, find a nearby Ttareungi rental station and return it. Put the Ttareungi on the cradle and pull the lock lever down as shown in the picture to complete the return. If the cradle is full, it is okay to stand it nearby as shown below.

Ttareungi – Return

You don’t have to return it to the rental office where you rented it, but you can’t return it anywhere along the road like an electric scooter. Be sure to lower the lock lever at the Ttareungi rental office and check the ‘return complete’ message.

Other tips & precautions when using Ttareungi

1. Accumulation of transit mileage
If you are using a one-year commuter pass, you can earn transit mileage by registering your transportation card in the Ttareungi app. If you return the Ttareungi and use public transportation within 30 minutes, you will accumulate 100 mileage points (up to 200 points per day). The opposite is also true.

※ Transportation card registration method

Smartphone app login
Select ‘My Info > Mileage’
Registration of transportation card (T-money / deferred payment transportation card)

You can accumulate up to 15,000 points per year, and the accumulated miles can be used to purchase the next commuter pass. Frequent users can actually ride the Ttareungi all year round for 15,000 won (30,000 won for 1 hour and 1 year pass – 15,000 won for mileage).

2. How to use LCD Ttareungi
Most of these Ttareungi are QR-type, but there may be cases where you need to ride the LCD Ttareungi. LCD Ttareungyido is mostly the same, but there are some differences between rental and return.

After purchasing the ticket, you need to register the rental card: Register T-money (or postpaid transportation card) in ‘App > My Information > Rental Card’
Rental: Click the green button in the middle of the front of the bike → tag the card → enter the password → unlock the lock
Return: After placing it on the cradle, pull the cradle connector and insert it into the terminal lock groove.

For more detailed information, it would be good to refer to the back of the YouTube video produced by the Seoul Facilities Management Corporation. Please note that this video is over 5 years old, so the menu location may be slightly different.

Use the bike path (if there is no road, the right end of the road)
